Following are comparisons of trip times between capital cities on the same basis as above but also including flying. The MonoCab VRT rapid transit system is a viable interstate transport proposition for both passengers and freight.
The car for these trips would be a variant of the standard car with aircraft style seating and other conveniences.
The car would be reserved by phone or internet perhaps 30 minutes before you leave. When you reach the station/mini station nearest your home you would enter your reservation code into the ticket machine and the car would arrive within a few minutes.
You could leave your home in Brisbane at 2:00 am and arrive in Sydney in time for a breakfast meeting having slept the whole trip - no overnight hotel and no luggage. When you have finished your meeting, you head for the MonoCab VRT rapid transit station and catch the next car back to Brisbane. No more trying to guess how long the meeting will last so that you can plan your return flight accordingly.
There are some 300 fights weekly each way between Brisbane and Sydney and some 500 flights each way between Sydney and Melbourne (the third busiest air corridor in the world). If only 30% of these passengers chose to travel on the MonoCab VRT rapid transit system, there would be a car leaving at intervals of less than 30 minutes. Because of the length of the trip, for economic reasons, these cars would generally only travel when they have 75%+ of a full compliment of passengers rather than just a single passenger as would often be the case for travel within cities.
The proposal to build a high speed rail connection between Sydney and Melbourne has been just raised again. This was first raised in the mid 1980s but no proposal was considered commercially viable. According a recent Sydney Morning Herald report (18-09-2010), the land acquisition costs alone for this route are $13.7 billion. Another report indicated a construction cost of $48 million per kilometre - a total of $42 billion for the route. This gives a total construction cost of $55.7 billion for this proposal.
The cost of a MonoCab VRT system for this route would be less than $6 billion - operational. Land acquisition costs would be minimal due to system utilising existing roadway reserves.

As the crude oil supply/demand situation degrades with the consequent inflation of the oil price, the cost of flying is going to increase, probably dramatically. Remember when the oil price rose to $146.00 US? Remember what that did to the cost of flying?

During public displays of our MonoCab VRT model, we conduct a written survey (name, address and comments). We
also ask respondents two questions:- |
