If you had to write the ideal specification for a Rapid Transit System it would probably
look something like this:-
The Ideal Specification:-
- Fast.
- Low fares.
- 24/7 Availability.
- No timetables.
- Convenience.
- Dramatically increase the number of people using public transport.
- Reduce car numbers on roads (less traffic congestion).
- Reduce fuel consumption.
- Reduce pollution.
- Reduce car parking problems.
The Ideal Solution:-
- Faster than travelling by car.
- Minimal waiting time (eg 5 minutes max).
- As accessible as a bus system.
- 24 hours per day operation.
- Highly computerised.
- Extensive network.
- Security for passengers.
- Low construction cost (= low fares).
- Low operating costs (= low fares).
- Minimal impact on existing infrastructure during construction.
(lower construction costs + less inconvenience to the public)
