MonoCab VRT Passenger Capacity:-
A normal divided road (2 lanes each way) will carry 6400 cars per
hour in each direction at 40 km/h. Assuming 1.5 passengers per car, this
equates to 9600 passengers per hour each way (off peak). During peak
times (<20 km/h) these figures reduce to less than 3200 cars and 4800 passengers per hour.
The MonoCab VRT rapid transit solution (100 km/h) can move
8550 cars per hour in both peak and off peak times in each direction providing
there are sufficient cars. Assuming 4 passengers per car at peak times, each track will carry 26,660
passengers per hour each way.
Hence the MonoCab VRT rapid transit solution will carry 5.55 times
the passengers of divided roads at peak times (26,660/4800) and 2.78 times the
passengers at off peak times (26,660/9600).
Gold Coast Example:-
Currently on the Gold Coast, only 4%
of journeys are undertaken on public transport. The Queensland Government wants to raise this to 7%.
Given the critical crude oil prognosis, they should be targeting 50% at least. This is the figure used
in the assessment below of the number of cars required for the Gold Coast
MonoCab VRT rapid transit system.
Gold Coast City Council's estimated population figures at 30 June
2006 indicate that approximately 450,000 people live on the Gold Coast south
of Coomera. 365,000 (81.3%) of these are below the age of
65.
The number of cars required has been assessed using these
parameters:-
-
50% of these 365,000 (i.e. 182,500) people will use the
MonoCab VRT rapid transit system in the two peak times of 7:30 - 9:30 am and 4:30 - 6:30 pm on any business day (91,250 people per
hour).
-
Average car occupancy of 4 passengers per Type A car (50%).
-
Each Type A car will have 4 trips per hour (15 minutes per trip).
Based on these parameters, 5,718 Type A MonoCab VRT cars will be
required.
In the budget for the full
200 km system ($1.4 billion) allowance has been for 6,000 Type A cars plus 1000
Type B cars. Using the above parameters, these 7000 cars give an
available seat to passenger ratio of 2.8 to 1.
Queensland Rail claim that their South East Queensland rail
network carries 170,000 passengers per day. This network extends from Gympie to the Gold
Coast and west to Ipswich.
The proposed MonoCab VRT rapid transit network for the Gold Coast
carries more than this twice a day just in the peak times.
